I see art as a process. The work starts for me in the gathering stage, this is where I research and form the concept for the work. As an assemblage sculptor, the gathering stage is critical. I gather more than ten objects. Words are also a source of inspiration for me. I glean many of my ideas from words. I use objects in combination with the written word in watch assemblage. This allows me to layer information throughout every aspect of my work. The resulting artwork is a type of sight poem. The surreal juxtapositions that occur from this layering inform the work on a visceral level. As a rule, I create my art in a series. When exhibiting a series of work, another level is created.

I love toying with the notions of intimate and monumental. The notion of filling a large space with small detailed objects is fascinating to me. My installations are nothing more than assemblages in a room sized format. The overall experience and interpretation becomes twofold: one relates to the largeness of the whole to overwhelm, the other relates to the power of the intimate to draw to itself. This push/pull gestalt is fascinating to me.

The underlying meaning of my work deals with the matter of redemption. I use reclaimed materials and redeem them, There is powerful symbolism in the thought that a piece of refuse can be transformed and elevated to a gallery wall. This idea runs through every assemblage and installation that I create. The spiritual implications go without saying.

I have always been fascinated by the vibrant colors and intricate details that are found in nature. Unfortunately, we often tend to take these gifts for granted. I use photography as a medium to convey the beauty that we are surrounded by and the need to conserve the environment. I photograph images of nature with emphasis on lighting, detail, and composition.

Often, when I am taking photographs in the city or the country, I am astounded by the amount of litter that covers the ground. I feel that we have become immune to the trash that surrounds us. It was my intent with the Tainted Terrain project to show the urgent need to clean up our landscape. I feel we have a responsibility to ourselves, and to the generations that come after us, to protect the environment.

I use both film and digital Nikon cameras. A large majority of my photographs are taken with a macro lens.
