October 27 : Steve Liggett

 

BIOGRAPHY:
Steve Liggett has been an arts advocate and artist in the Tulsa community for over 30 years. He was awarded in 2001 the Harwelden Award for recognition of his work in the community. His formal education is from the University of Tulsa with a Master of Arts degree and a concentration in Ceramics. After college he was the resident artist for the Tulsa Park and Recreation Department for 4 years leading into a position as the Director of Johnson Atelier for an additional 6 years. He has a wide background in teaching experience in both private and public schools in Tulsa and taught at Holland Hall Preparatory School and is currently teaching part-time Art at Riverfield Country Day School. He has served as the Artistic Director for Living Arts of Tulsa for 13 years. His own studio works have evolved from his ceramics background to performance/video/installation work which have won many awards (Arts and Humanities Council Individual Artist Award, The Jingle Feldman Award, NextWorks grant for Interdisciplinary Work, Diverse Works Interdisciplinary Artists Award, just to name a few).

During his time as Artistic Director with Living Arts of Tulsa, it has grown from an organization with only an education program to a rich multimedia arts organization recognized nationwide for its support of contemporary art and artists. It hosts seven full time programs: Video Evenings, the Myers Gallery, the Performance Network, New Music, Education, and a Drumming Program as well as organizing 4 major festivals yearly: Dia de Los Muertos, The New Genre Festival, Ok Electric (an electronic arts festival) and Living With Art in the Garden. Most recently Living Arts became the recipient of the first award from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Travelocity has given Living Arts an award for the New Genre Festival which was voted one of the 10 best things about Oklahoma and the Urban Tulsa Weekly has awarded Living Arts the Undisputed Best Art Gallery Award.

ABSTRACT:
Liggett spoke about the programs at Living Arts and their mission which is to develop and present contemporary artforms. He also talked about Virginia Myers and how they have continued the work that she started which was to showcase works by "history-in-the-making" artists of today.
