ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - AIR

2022 Artist in Residence: Kees Holterman

Residency: September 10-19th, 2022

Exhibition: COPPER SNAKES, September 8th-October 13, 2022

"I’m honored and excited to be an Artist-In-Residence for ARTSPACE at Untitled this upcoming September. As a working artist with a full-time job and a diverse range of projects and goals, having time and space to think and create are both rare and vital. In my personal practice, I work in a confined studio in an extra room in my apartment. Though I am able to produce works of art that I am confident in, the small working area does not allow for experimentation with many sizes, formats, materials and equipment. Through their AIR Program, ARTSPACE generously provides a concentrated, intensive period and the room to create a work of art outside of my comfort zone, which will ultimately expand my methodology, thinking, and approach to art.

Because my roots are in printmaking, my residency experience will both be new and familiar. As my personal printmaking practice is devoted to silkscreen, ARTSPACE is allowing me to utilize the entirety of their printshop to connect me back to print methods that I was once thrilled by but do not currently indulge in. Supplies and access to full scale print shops are not easy to come by. With this residency, I’ll be able to enjoy the privilege of a wide range of print methods at my fingertips.  For my edition, I will be creating a mixed media print, combining silkscreen and block printing techniques.

I’m enamored by the vastness and diversity of American landscapes and cities, and am  thrilled to spend a lengthy amount of time in an area of the country I’ve never experienced. I plan to interact with Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas in order to immerse myself as much as possible in its culture. I hope to pull color schemes, characters, or vignettes of the city from my observations, and channel them into the edition of prints ARTSPACE and I will produce.

Artist-In-Residence programs like ARTSPACE are so necessary and important for the development of artists and their practices. They give artists time, space, solitude, and encourage discipline. Experiencing an isolated and focused environment allows experimentation and can often lead to profound and beautiful new works that otherwise would have not been created. I am so thankful for ARTSPACE’s generosity, flexibility, and encouragement. I can’t wait to get to work."

Our [AIR] program includes a national residency BY invitation and local residencies By APPLICATION

Una Anderson is a traditional printmaker and interdisciplinary artist. She incorporates mixed media and novel ink mixtures to build a base around which sits the visual information. Much of the imagery in her work revolves around visual metaphors used to describe inscape processing and efforts to positively address and promote our present social paradigm shifts. The materials she uses often include found objects, scrap construction material, silkscreen, intaglio, and relief printing. Together, the images and materials explore issues of comfort, community, and power structures. She was recently honored as Spotlight Artist in the 2021 Steamroller Printmaking Festival and was awarded a Summer Artist Residency from Artspace at [Untitled]. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Central Oklahoma and joyfully teaches visual art at Frederick A. Douglass High School.

Samantha Kickingbird is an artist and educator residing in the Oklahoma City area. She gained her first printmaking experience at OU. From that time, she has grown and expanded her repertoire to include a combination of different techniques. Her work joins the ideas of illustration with the conventions and materials of traditional fine art applications to create work that is uniquely stylized and narrative.

Justin Stier is a local illustrator and teacher from Oklahoma. After graduating college at UCO in '07 he went into the graphic design field and that led him to become a children's book illustrator. Primarily a digital illustrator he also works with traditional media such as pen and ink, watercolor, and printmaking, along with expanding his art knowledge as he continues to explore other means.

14-Week Artist Residency (oPEN to Various mediums)

2022 applications are now closed.

This residency is open to local artists with no printmaking knowledge required. Our working studio provides a space for multiple disciplines and this residency is available to both those who wish to pursue printmaking or other mediums.

Artists applying to ARTSPACE at Untitled’s residency program should not be enrolled in an academic program during the residency timeline. Applications consisting of small collaboratives (2-3 total members) are eligible to apply. Each artist included in the collaborative must submit a resume.

Artists in Residence are encouraged to participate in other public programming by providing the public a glimpse into their process through demonstrations, workshops, talks and an exhibit in the Press Gallery. Local artists have the opportunity to work alongside our national and international visiting AIR.

  • Artist will commit to spending 20 hours a week utilizing our equipment in the ARTSPACE studio to complete their projects. The 20 hours must be during normal operating hours, Tuesday-Saturday 10am-6pm. However, the studio is always open to the Artist in Residence during after hours programming. Agreements must be met or the residency is subject to termination.

  • Agrees to teach either a workshop or host a lecture concerning processes and methods they are utilizing in their own work.

  • If the resident completes their requirements, they will be given the opportunity to exhibit in our PRESS gallery.

  • Artist will be expected to complete an edition of 40 prints, 11” x 14” in size. The edition will be split 50/50 with ARTSPACE. The print edition for the 14 week resident does not have to be their main focus, but it must be an original idea that corresponds with the body of work they are producing during their residency. ARTSPACE covers all the costs of the edition.

  • This can be a collaborative residency, but you must apply as a collaboration if you are wanting more than one artist to work on your ARTSPACE edition.

  • Preference will be given to educators for the summer residency.

  • Preference will be given to artists with some knowledge of printmaking due to the nature of the artists working independently.

  • The Artist in Residence has the opportunity to participate in any workshops hosted by ARTSPACE at Untitled throughout the duration of their residency.
