Josette Simon Gestin: Encres de Chine Assessing the weight of the present against the infinite possibilities

About the exhibition:

For many years I have been painting, drawing, etching, making collage or ceramics. If my work includes a lot of series, I can say that I love to paint women and children in a world of fantasy made of strange animals in baroque situations. I wish to express the complexity, the beauty, the ambiguity of the world as I feel it. In all these women, there is something of me but the sum of all these women does not equal me or I would have nothing more to say. I paint and draw and create a word of fantasy with colors to illuminate the world with Chagall and Picasso not far away.

Numerous series have accompanied me during my itinerances.

I moved to Shanghai 2 years ago. What could be more inspiring to start a new series of work in ink! Intricate motifs of the Chinese temple, strolls along the Yangtze, the art of calligraphy, Chinese dresses are part of the visual landscape which find its way in my drawings. I have been looking for a path through the Chinese culture and my western heritage.

I am telling the story of one woman who left Brittany 33 years ago who draw, paint, trying to fit together all the pieces of her life in an artwork.I emphasize that my life nourishes my art and that art nourishes my life in a nonstop twirl which I wish to last forever!

My work is currently in an exhibit in Vannes (France) at XO conseil. Next October, I will show my ink drawings AT Untitled Artspace and the following month I will be opening an exhibit at Objets Trouvés with my new paintings.
