In addition, my print designs have graced the collections of various women's wear retailers, such as Ann Taylor, Cold Water Creek, Macy's, and Casual Corner, among others.

A Balance of Nature, Jeanine Coupe Ryding Exhibition

A Balance of Nature, Jeanine Coupe Ryding Exhibition

Of her work, Jeanine writes, "I have been making woodcut prints since 1967. They have been a constant companion to my ideas and my life, even when I have not had access to a print shop or press. I have made prints in the U.S., Germany, France, Canada, Italy and Belgium. I have printed work with over 60 people watching at print symposia and alone in my studio. I have printed my woodcuts on beautiful, old French Tool presses, brand new Tackach presses. I have also used a wooden salad spoon on my hands and knees on the living room floor. The expressive quality of the cut mark is an important part of the energy of each piece.  I am often thinking of a three-dimensional shape and then describing it as I carve the block. The act of cutting an image into the wood offers possibilities and limitations in making marks that help me define the concepts in my work." Jeanine's prints and artist's books are in museum and private collections throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan.

She focuses primarily on woodcut prints, etchings, artist’s books, drawing and collage and has founded both Shadow Press and Press 928 in Evanston, Illinois, for fine art publishing. She received her BA from The University of Iowa and her MFA from Universitat der Kunste, Berlin, Germany. She has received various awards and residencies including Illinois Arts Council Award, Arts Midwest, Frans Masereel Center, Belgium and Anchor Graphics, Chicago, and had been teaching in the PrintMedia Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1991, and is now retired.

CLASS FULL: Galen Berry's Marbling Workshop

to Mar 9

CLASS FULL: Galen Berry's Marbling Workshop

  • ARTSPACE at Untitled (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The first day (5 hours) will be a beginning class, learning the basics of marbling on paper.  I show the class a selection of typical marbled papers, and teach them the names of the traditional patterns.  Then I give a full demonstration of the whole marbling process, with the students gathered around my marbling tank.  Next they learn how to apply alum to the paper, how to mix the carrageenan, how to prepare the paints, and how to do several standard patterns such as the Feather, French curl, Peacock, Stone marble, Italian vein, Flowers, Nonpareil, and Spanish wave.  Each person will have an individual small marbling tray, so no sharing of trays will be necessary.  (The students will work on 9½" x 12½" papers, since it’s much easier to learn on small sheets than large ones, and they’ll get to do more different patterns that way too.)  Each person will be able to marble from 10 to 15 papers to take home during this class.

The second day (5 hours) will be a more advanced class.  We will learn several more patterns, slightly more complex, such as the Thistle, Moiré, Fantasy wave, Antique spot, and Ripple.  We will experiment with Overmarbling and Masking, and will do some marbling on cotton fabric.  Each person will also get to do a sheet of paper in a large tray, printing a standard-size 19" x 25" paper.  There will be time toward the end of this day for some individual experimentation.

By the time students finish these two days, they will have learned all important aspects of marbling, and will know enough about it to go home and, with practice, produce excellent quality work.  For those who are mainly interested in fabric marbling, it is always best to learn on paper first.  The same supplies and techniques used for marbling on paper are also used in fabric marbling; the few differences will be discussed in class.

Students are not required to bring anything to class except pen and paper to take notes with, and a lunch if desired.  I provide all supplies used in the class.  A small materials fee will be charged.  For those who wish to purchase supplies to take home, after class we will have a table set up with all the basic marbling supplies for sale on it -- paints, paper, carrageenan, alum, gall, combs, rakes, brushes, and booklets.  This will save you the trouble of ordering supplies later, plus you will be able to continue marbling as soon as you get home while the things you have learned are fresh in your memory.  The prices for supplies that we sell in class will be the same as on our website.

Skylight Book Launch

Skylight Book Launch

A handmade Limited edition letterpress book launch

ARTSPACE at Untitled is pleased to host a book launch to present Skylight, a handmade limited edition book of poems by local poet Jane Vincent Taylor.

Skylight is a twenty-four poem narrative told in the voice of a woman — a teacher and poet — spending her final days in an assisted living facility. Though physically failing, the narrator continues to read, observe, communicate, and dream.

Denise Brady edited and designed the book. She hand set and printed the letterpress edition and also completed the non-adhesive sewing into handmade paper covers. Nolan Bennett assisted with this edition through a University of Nebraska at Omaha Fine Arts Press/Gibraltar Editions Fellowship.

Hanna Demma created a unique drawing on her handmade over-beaten abaca paper for each copy, which has been tipped into the title page spread.

Published by Gibraltar Editions in Omaha, Nebraska, Skylight is limited to 55 copies, each signed by the poet, visual artist, and book artist.

The book launch is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024, 5-7 p.m. at ARTSPACE at Untitled, NE 3rd Street in Oklahoma City and will feature a short reading by the poet and comments by the book artist.

Copies will be available for sale. $65.00 each.

Uncovering

Quilt + Paint

Qu’aint is an ongoing conversation between painting and quilting, past and present. Sarah Atlee, Brenda Esslinger, Elizabeth Richards, Ann Solinski, Agnes Stadler, and Jason Wilson have been collaborating since 2018 to investigate the different ways we make meaning from material.

The Uncovering | Qu’aint Exhibition features contemporary art quilts and paintings that are inspired by the two art forms’ commonalities.

There is a common misconception that quilting is a dying art. The collaborative art group Qu’aint is here to show audiences that quilting is alive and thriving, inspiring contemporary artists to reach new ground.

With Uncovering, the Qu’aint artists hope to illuminate the ways that genres overlap and provoke conversation about what unites us.

Mark your calendars now for the opening reception of Uncovering at ARTSPACE at Untitled on May 23rd, 5-8 PM.

Marking: Indigenous Narrative Opening Reception

Woodblock Prints by Indigenous Artists

Join us for an engaging evening celebrating art and culture at the opening reception of "Marking: Indigenous Narrative," a captivating large-scale relief printmaking exhibition. Immerse yourself in the power of monochrome expression as we showcase the works of 18 talented artists, each sharing their unique stories through the ancient art of woodcut printing.

  • Date: Thursday, April 11th

  • Private Opening for Donors and Sponsors: 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

  • Open to the Public: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation for their invaluable support in bringing this remarkable exhibition to life.

Discover the evolution of woodcut printing, a technique with roots deep in history yet possessing contemporary relevance. Woodcut printing involves:

  • Carving an image into a block of wood.

  • Leaving the raised areas to apply ink, which is then transferred onto paper or fabric.

  • Resulting in a striking, textured artwork/ Print.

Enjoy the rhythmic tunes of the Thunderboy Singers from 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM and Tony Tee will DJ the event from 7-8 PM. Delight your taste buds with delicious culinary creations curated by Victoria Redbird of Unite the People Native Catering. Please note that Redbird's offerings will be available for purchase, so remember to bring cash. Additionally, complimentary finger foods will be provided for attendees. Quench your thirst at our cash bar, expertly tended by Jessica Meikle, as you mingle with fellow art enthusiasts and creators alike.

Take advantage of this opportunity to experience the convergence of art, culture, and community.

Marking: Indigenous Narrative Exhibition

The 2024 Steamroller Print Fest Spotlight Print Exhibition

WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY INDIGENOUS ARTISTS

ARTSPACE at Untitled’s annual Spotlight exhibition features an all-indigenous show featuring woodblock prints, a form of carving in which the artist makes markings on the top surface of a wood block, leaving a raised image.

The artists in this exhibition will carve on wood blocks, using tools to shape and detail their design by carving and mark-making. Ink is then applied to the carved woodblock and the block is then printed on paper or fabric. Mark your calendars now for the opening of Marking: Indigenous Narrative at ARTSPACE at Untitled April 11th, 5-8 PM.
