ARTSPACE at Untitled is excited to present “Grains of Sand,” a talk by Tamar Zinguer. Zinguer, an architect and assistant professor of Architecture at OU’s Gibbs College of Architecture, is presenting the talk as an OU Arts & Humanities Public Forum Fellow in collaboration with ARTSPACE.

As an architectural historian, she has been examining the pedagogy of design through history and across scales. Her present manuscript Sandbox: An Architectural History centers on the material nature of sand and traces the history of the sandbox, how it activates both inner and outer landscapes.

In her talk, she grapples with the question: why is sand relevant to us? From memories of building sandcastles on the beach, to the draining of grains of sand through an hourglass and the inevitable passage of time, to artists and writers—such as Jasper Johns and Edward Albee—embracing the sandbox in their works, sand is mystifying, porous, filled with benevolent and malevolent possibilities. It’s in the context of these various landscapes that she also discusses the definition and historical role of the sandbox, the well-known space of play. Zinguer’s exploration reveals sand as an allegory for experimentation, transformation, and becoming.
